NBA Draft

Today marked the NBA's 2016 draft lottery, and resulted with the Philadelphia 76ers getting their first pick of team members. The 76ers seem to be in the positive spotlight at the moment, things are going their way. Getting to choose the cream of the crop for their team is a massive boost and will likely give the NBA some of the best players to come. Read more here.

But for those of you who don't know much of what a draft is you can rest assured because we'll be going through it here.

NBA Draft:

The NBA Draft is an annual event dating back to 1950 in which the thirty teams from the National Basketball Association (NBA) can draft players who are eligible and wish to join the league. These are typically college basketball players, but international players are also eligible to be drafted. College players who have finished their four-year college eligibility are automatically eligible for selection, while the underclassmen have to declare their eligibility and give up their remaining college eligibility. International players who are at least 23 years old are automatically eligible for selection, while the players younger than 22 have to declare their eligibility.

The Draft Lottery:

The NBA draft lottery is an annual event held by the NBA to determine the draft order. The teams who missed the playoffs in the previous season participate in a lottery process to determine the draft order. The lottery winner gets the first selection in the draft. In the current rules, 14 non-playoff teams participate in the draft lottery. The lottery is weighted so that the team with the worst record has the best chance of obtaining higher draft picks. The lottery process determines the first three picks of the draft. The rest of the first-round order of picks is in reverse order of the remaining teams' win-loss record. The lottery does not determine the draft order in the second round of the draft. The term "lottery pick" denotes a draft pick whose position is determined through the lottery, while the non-playoff teams involved in the process are often called "lottery teams". The draft lottery system was first used in the 1985 draft.

What it means for the 76ers:

So what does this mean for the 76ers. The draft lottery winner get's the first choice of players, usually from college, and get the cream of the crop. This gives a distinct advantage, the 76ers can poach the best talent possible. However it takes tremendous talent to distinguish the best, making the choices for the 76ers so very crucial.The first three places went to the Philadelphia 76er, the LA Lakers, and the Boston Celtics.

NBA Teams And Sponsors

Yesterday it was announced that the Philadelphia 76ers would be the first team to put a sponsors logo on their Jersey. This is a big step for sponsors, it is considered some of the most effective logo placements. The Philadelphia 76ers have agreed to shot StubHub's logo on their jerseys.

This change of adorning logos on jerseys is slightly controversial, as some feel that it diminishes a teams identity. However, some can think of it as a triumph for companies and basketball teams that can both symbiotically benefit from each other. I really do think the latter. I think that if both a team and company can benefit from placing their brand on another. It is very much like sports. as a team you can do very well.

It is important to understand the principals of sponsoring:

• sponsorship should be based on contractual obligations between the sponsor and the sponsored party
• Sponsors and sponsored parties should set out clear terms and conditions with all other partners involved, to define their expectations regarding all aspects of the sponsorship deal
• The terms and conduct of sponsorship should be based upon the principle of good faith between all parties to the sponsorship
• Sponsored parties should have the absolute right to decide on the value of the sponsorship rights that they are offering and the appropriateness of the sponsor with whom they contract

It's important that the sponsors don't over take the jersey that they're on. It would really diminish the teams importance over the companies importance. For the moment it looks as though StubHub will be placing a relatively small logo on the jersey, thus not diminishing the team. 

Major league basketball is the first massive sport in america to do this. The NFL (national football league), MLB (major league baseball), and NHL (national hockey league) are still to follow.

NBA - LA Lakers give Luke Walton 5 year deal

A few weeks ago, reports we coming in that a deal was being made that would make Luke Walton the head coach of the LA Lakers. The deal is reportedly going to be contracted for five years, yielding a contract payment of somewhere around $25 million which is 5 million dollars a year. A good looking deal to say the least. Read more here. This may seem like a rather large amount, however Luke Walton previously played for the LA Lakers.

This means that Walton knows the team well and knows what it's like on the court. Currently Walton is acting as an interim coach for the Warriors (from 2015 to 2016), giving him even some experience as a coach. Having actually played for the Lakers is of massive benefit, he knows where the team has weaknesses and where there are strengths. Walton will be essential for the transition of the team after Kobe Bryant retires.

It will be an interesting transitional period for the Lakers, hopefully a successful one. However with the experience Walton has it should be relatively smooth. However with Kobe Bryant leaving there will be a significant void in the Lakers talent. Hopefully with Walton's guidance some fresh talent can be found. Kobe has had a 20 year career with the Lakers, which in basketball is a huge amount of time. And players usually don't play as long as he has, so it isn't a surprise that he has decided to retire. 

Speaking to Walton's credentials, Walton played for 10 seasons and won 2 NBA championships. In 2015 the Warriors won the NBA Finals and was his first win as a coach. Prospects are looking good for the Lakers, even with Kobe's retirement. Time will tell if the Lakers will thrive under Walton.

Introduction to Basketball

As many people know, basketball is a sport played by two teams. Five players at a time can play on the court, and substitutes can be made each quarter.

Characteristics of Basketball:

• Contact is allow (within reason)
• 5 players per side
• Each gender has their own competition
• Courts are mostly inside, sometimes outside (known as Streetball)

A team can score a field goal by shooting the ball through the basket during regular play. A field goal scores three points for the shooting team if the player shoots from behind the three-point line, and two points if shot from in front of the line. A team can also score via free throws, which are worth one point, after the other team was assessed with certain fouls. The court lines you can see below:

Basketball teams generally have player positions, the tallest and strongest members of a team are called a center or power forward, while slightly shorter and more agile players are called small forward, and the shortest players or those who possess the best ball handling skills are called a point guard or shooting guard. The point guard directs the on court action of the team, implementing the coach's game plan, and managing the execution of offensive and defensive plays.

Basketball is hugely competitive and has many divisions throughout many countries of the world. The NBA in America is the biggest and most followed division. The NBA has given us some of the most well known players of the sport, the most well know is Michael Jordan.
